Moongates originate in China and brought to Bermuda in the late 19th century by British inhabitants. The moongates of Bermuda are made of Bermuda limestone. Many are freestanding gates used as entryways in parks and gardens. According to local legend it is good luck for newlyweds to walk through the gates.

The moongate in Somers park has a bronze plaque which is inscribed:

David F. Raine 1941 - 2004
By his wife Jill and good friend Arthur Clinton
