Robert S. Kerr was born on a 2-acre homestead southeast of Ada on September 11, 1896 in what was Oklahoma Indian Territory. He was a U.S. Senator from 1948 to 1963, when he passed away from a heart attack. He was also the 12th Governor of Oklahoma from 1943 to 1947, and was Chairman of the Board of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries. He leaves behind a long legacy of accomplishments. Dozens of Oklahoma schools, buildings, roads, streets, parks, organizations, and events are named in Kerr's honor.
The log cabin on the original homestead is a crude one-room log home with no windows. At the rear is a lean-to extension with one window. A stone fireplace is on the east wall. A rather large wood porch is at the front. The area is surrounded by an iron fence.
When Kerr passed away on January 1, 1963, he was originally laid to rest on this homestead and his grave remained here for 40 years. In 2006, the family made the decision to move his grave to Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City, where his siblings and many family members are buried. A granite grave slab has been left at the homestead as a memorial to Kerr.
