resort created under the Second Empire, Wimereux took its name from the river that flows into the sea at the spot where the city was built. The territory of Wimereux originally belonged to the municipality of Wimille Wimereux which broke away in 1899.
Wimereux is a remarkable architectural ensemble of houses and buildings typical of the Belle Époque which continue to be maintained.
Originally secondary residence of wealthy families from Lille and Paris, Wimereux became the last twenty years the residential suburb of the agglomeration of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Wimereux also attracts Britons, Belgians and Russians who come to settle there.
