Wood
David R.
Lost at Sea
1921 - 1944

The following information is from the Find A Grave website:

"Son, David R. Wood name on tombstone. After joining the Navy in October, 1943, David became a radioman second class petty officer aboard the USS ALBACORE (SS-218), reporting aboard 7 October 1943 while the boat was in port at Brisbane, Australia. David participated in War Patrols 7, 8, 9 and 10. During War Patrol 11, on 7 November, 1944, while submerged off the West Coast of the Japanese of Hokkaido, the ALBACORE encountered a mine. The resulting explosion led to the loss of the boat and all 85 of the crew, including RM2 Wood. At the end of WWII, David held 6 Combat War Patrol Awards, the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, World War Two Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medals. As of 2009, the ALBACORE has not been found and all crewmembers remain on eternal patrol with their shipmates. David's name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Lost at the Punchbowl National Cemetery, Honolulu Hawaii, Submariners Wall of Honor - East, Groton CT, and at the ALBACORE On Eternal Patrol Monument located at Beaverton OR (dedicated 11Nov2008). The country is eternally grateful for the sacrifices made by the submarine navy in WWII. The Silent Service dealt massive losses to Japanese civil and military fleets, allowing the Allies to build the ships and train the men to remove the Japanese from the conquests they had taken in the late 1930's and early 1940's."
