EN: The Herrain is the landmark of Schupfart. It is located on the northern edge of the old village center. The hill was created in the 10th or 11th century and is the remains of a so-called motte-and-bailey castle. The entire site had a size of about 120 to 80 meters, the maximum height difference is 25 meters. At the highest point, there was probably a residential tower of wood, the terraced area south of it was overbuilt with outbuildings, surrounded by a palisade. A broad ditch separated the castle from the mountainside.

The Herrain is the only known motte in the Canton Aargau and is considered an archaeological monument of national importance.

The builders of the castle are unknown, the castle was already abandoned when the town was first mentioned in a document. However, a close relationship to the Earls of Homberg-Thierstein is very probable.

DE: Der Herrain ist das Wahrzeichen Schupfarts. Er befindet sich am Nordrand des alten Dorfkerns. Der Erdhügel wurde im 10. oder 11. Jahrhundert errichtet und ist das Überbleibsel einer Erdhügelburg, eine sogenannte Motte. Die gesamte Anlage mass etwa 120 auf 80 Meter, der maximale Höhenunterschied 25 Meter. An der höchsten Stelle stand ein vermutlich ein Wohnturm aus Holz, die terassierte Fläche südlich davon war mit Nebengebäuden bebaut und von einer Palisade umgeben. Ein breiter Graben trennte die Burg vom Berghang.

Der Herrain ist die einzige bekannte Motte im Kanton Aargau und gilt als archäologisches Baudenkmal von nationaler Bedeutung.

Die Erbauer der Burg sind unbekannt, da sie schon wieder aufgegeben war als Schupfart das erste Mal urkundlich erwähnt wurde. Eine enge Verbindung zu den Grafen von Homberg-Thierstein gilt aber als sehr wahrscheinlich.
