The McDowell Sonoran Preserve covers 30,000 contiguous acres of sonoran desert lands and includes the McDowell mountains. The Sunset trailhead is one of the entrance points to the preserve. There are 170 miles of hiking trails. Trail access and parking is free. Motor vehicles are not allowed. Horses, bikes and dogs are accommodated. Hiking is encouraged, camping sites are available throughout and geocaching is a major focus.The Sunset trailhead provides access and parking for hikers, bikers and horseback travellers.
