In 1906, the Rural Municipality of Strathcona seceded from the Rural Municipality of Argyle in a dispute over Argyle's refusal to grant a liquor licence to the new hotel in Belmont. The CN railway line through the region had opened in 1900. Abandonment of the rail line began in 1973 and the last tracks were removed in 2006, coinciding with the centennial of the formation of the R.M. of Strathcona. As a centennial project, 28 km of the former rail line was converted into a recreational trail. This trailhead is located at the east end of the trail at the R.M. of Argyle boundary. The trail begins at Boundary Road just south of Highway 23 and proceeds to the west. (The railbed also continues to the east but is not maintained for hiking in this direction.)

In 2015, the R.M. of Strathcona and the R.M. of Riverside merged, forming the R.M. of Prairie Lakes, which is now responsible for the trail.

There is room on the road for parking of a couple of cars at the trailhead.
