Ada is the county seat for Pontotoc County, and has a population of approximately 17,000. It is the home of the Chickasaw Nation. Ada has a City Manager/City Council form of government. There are five Council members, one from each of the four Wards and one "at large." They serve two year terms. The City Manager is appointed by the Council.
The Council meets and 1st and 3rd Monday at 5:45pm in City Hall, located at 231 S. Townsend Street. The Council meetings are televised on Channel 6. City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8:00-5:00.
This area was first settled by the Daggs family in the 1880's and the area was known as Daggs Prairie. A post office was established in 1891 and the town was renamed Ada after a local businessman Jeff Reed's daughter.
Ada is the home of East Central University which began in 1909, and is also the birthplace of Robert S.Kerr, Oklahoma's first Native American Governor and longtime U.S. Senator.
