This watering trough, dating from 1887, recalls Richmond's vivid history. Located on the site of the 1887 - 1909 Fort Bend County Courthouse, the trough was restored in 1986.

The City of Richmond was laid out in 1837 amid large plantations with acreage devoted to cotton, sugar cane, livestock, and later rice became a major crop. The watering trough was used by livestock running loose through town and by horses and teams belonging to farmers and others who came to buy goods and transact business. There were several stables in the area, including Frank Bells Livery stable; horses were also tethered a block away at the sight of the present Fort Bend County Courthouse. The watering trough symbolizes Richmond's agricultural Roots.

This trough placed here in honor of Richmond's 150th birthday.

American Rice Growers Richmond division.

Richmond Irrigation Company since 1928.
