"It was opened by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in 1865. Four cannons dramatically highlight this section. In the fall of 1877, the Post Babcock GAR donated $50 to the monument fund for the purchase of four cannons. The cannons are six-pounders and were placed at the south side of the site. They were purchased from the Erie Railroad Company who had stored them in their Jersey City depot for a long time due to the fact that the transportation charges were never paid by the owner."
