This plaque, placed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city of Winnipeg, describes the Red River Ox Cart, the first mode of land transportation used in the development of western Canada. The plaque is accompanied by a larger than life sculpture of an ox-drawn cart.
The Red River Ox Cart first appeared in what is now North Dakota in 1801. They were the principal means of land transportation in North Dakota, Minnesota, and most importantly, Manitoba until the arrival of the railroads in the 1870s and 1880s. In Canada, they are associated in particular with the Red River Colony (founded in 1811) and the Metis people of Manitoba.
