Hell Bunker is the iconic feature of the par 5 14th hole on the Old Course at St.Andrews. It has been in existence since at least 1821 when the first plan of the course was produced. Since then it has evolved into its current form having last been rebuilt in 1998 when it took five men a month to revet its face using 10,000 turfs. It is the largest bunker on the course at 600 square metres and at its deepest is 10 feet high. Jack Nicklaus famously got caught in here in the 1995 Open Championship, taking many shots to get out on his way to a ten. The bunker can be visited most easily on a Sunday when the Old Course is traditionally closed for play.
