In Lancaster, at a rest stop along Mass. Route 2, is a painted former chair-lift that depicts the life of "Johnny Appleseed."

The rest stop is on the westbound side of the highway, a few miles before the intersection with I-190, and after the exit for Mass. Route 70. The bench is located in a shelter east of the main building at the rest stop, by a map.

The bench is made of both metal and wood. The bar - which has a metal plane - shelf that usually keeps a person in place, is fully raised. There are also metal posts extending to the ground where a person would rest the skis on.

All parts of the bench are painted. The most elaborate is the raised bar/shelf. That shows a pastoral scene with Mt. Wachusett in the background. A man, representing Johnny Appleseed, is shown, walking to another person lying down. There is an apple tree to the right. On the seat are apple tree branches with flowers on them, with the front posts painted for form trunks and the ground. There are various other designs and text, including listing of relatives (his real name was John Chapman).

The back is similarly decorated on the bar-shelf. However, below that is a large banner, which has text stating, "Take a Seat in Johnny Appleseed Country."
