IRON MINING IN CANADA
L'EXTRACTION DU FER AU CANADA

Although there is evidence of Norse working bog iron in Newfoundland in the 11th century, commercial extraction of iron in Canada began near Trois-Rivières in the 1730's. In the 19 century there were local workings in Upper Canada and Nova Scotia, but it was only in 1890's that major deposits were discovered north of Lake Superior and here in Western Labrador. Still, it took almost 50 years to overcome transportation problems; the first ore was shipped from Steep Rock in 1945 and from Knob Lake in 1954.By the mi-1970's the Labrador deposits accounted for 62% of Canada's iron.
