The Drouwenerzand on the Hondsrug between the villages Gasselte and Drouwen. At the beginning of the last century the Drouwenerzand was considered a major disaster. Years of overgrazing by sheep, the stabbing of heather sods and the mining of pebbles kept the 'grinding sand sea "of the Drouwenerzand in motion. This was a threat to farmland and roads. A contrast to the peaceful look that now provides the grounds.
The portion of land that is not wooded, consisting of pieces resting shifting sand and heather shrub and Crowberry. Scattered in the area over large areas appearing moss and lichen vegetation. The site is an important nesting area for the Woodlark, Stonechat and Nightjars. The Shrike is a regular winter visitor.
