The Walled Garden on the Holkham Hall estate is some 0.6km west of Holkham Hall itself and is surrounded by an almost continuous stand of trees. It is some 6 acres, 2.5 hectares, in extent and originally laid out by Samuel Wyatt during the late 1700s. Further information can be found here
Walled Garden
This bellcote is on the gardeners office block at its west end. Originally it contained a single, small bell which would have been used to signal the start and end of the gardeners' shifts, and the working day, when there would have been a large staff.
The cote is built as a vertical extension, about 5m high, of the west wall of the office block, it has two grey brick pillars with an infill wall which contains the double-arched opening for the bell. Above and central on the infill section is a copper wind-vane which has lost is cardinal markers, if it ever had any, but is still in working condition.
The office block has been restored, as has much of the garden's infrastructure, but unfortunately the bell is still missing and will probably be the last item to be restored, if ever.
