I discovered a neat Indian Mortar while looking for a nearby survey disk. The mortar even had a piece of obsidian laying near it, a remnant from the days. This mortar lies just south of a scenic overlook parking area. The parking area even contained an interpretive display that highlighted the Modoc Indians that lived along these riverbanks for thousands of years and used bedrock here to make Indian mortars to grind Wocus seeds into meal. Tule Lake water levels were much higher here, before this area was converted into farmland in the early 1900s. Now, Tule Lake is about 10% of the size it once was. There are probably dozens of other Indian mortars to be discovered in bedrock along Hill Rd.
Type: Bedrock Mortar
