Survey landmarks of Ministry of War
This 150 year old hard stone pole, indicated the boundary of a military area in earlier times. A few of these landmarks still remain and can be found in various sizes and shapes. The most common size of the landmarks around the former forts are ± .30 x 30 x 90 centimeters. At the upper side the letter O (=”Oorlog”, the Dutch word for war) is visible and at the front face usually a serial number is visible. Also, the corners of the post are still some chamfered. The boundary extends generally just a little bit above the parapet.

In en rond Willemstad vind je nog enkele grenspaaltjes van het Ministerie van Oorlog.
Met grenspaaltjes werd in vroegere tijden de perceelgrens van een militair gebied aangegeven. Men gebruikte hiervoor paaltjes gemaakt van hardsteen. Deze grenspalen zijn er in verschillende maten en vormen. De meest voorkomende maat van de grenspalen rond de forten van de N.H.W. zijn ±.30 x 30 x 90 centimeter. Aan de bovenzijde en aan de voorzijde staan een letter en een cijfer. De letter O staat voor ministerie van Oorlog en het cijfer is een volgnummer. Ook zijn de hoeken van de paal nog wat afgeschuind. De grenspaal steekt over het algemeen maar een klein stukje boven het maaiveld uit. De grenspalen die in bermen langs wegen staan worden tijdens het maaien van het hoge gras niet altijd opgemerkt. Het gevolg is dat de paal beschadigd raakt en soms wordt hij met grof geweld scheef gedrukt of na verloop van tijd geheel uit de grond getrokken. Een grenspaal die misschien wel zo'n 150 dienstjaren heeft verdiend toch wel beter. Het komt ook voor dat de paaltjes van beton zijn. Deze zijn niet voorzien van de letter O maar een D en staan vaak rond een V.I.S kazemat. Rond Willemstad zien we weer een ander type grenspaal. Bij dit type is de kop groter dan de steel van de paal. Kortom, het is de moeite waard ook eens naar deze kleine elementen in ons mooie landschap te kijken.
