The Pt Lonsdale Pier streches for 200m into the waters known as "The Rip" at the southwest of the Heads between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean which serve as the entry to Port Philip Bay. Many ships have come to grief while passing through this entry into the bay and there are still "close calls" even to this day.
There is fairly good fishing from the pier with whiting, salmon, squid, and even shark being caught
