Nellie Marie was born to the England family in Hugoton, Kansas on 31 August 1906. She first married Cleo Walter Hawk (1884-1930) who was 21 years her senior, and who ended his own life a year after the stock market crash. (Nellie was his second wife after he was widowed.)

Nellie married Ermal B. Stever (1917-1968) who was 10 years her junior in 1937. He passed away when Nellie was 61 years old. Nellie continued on until 6 September 2007, being a week over 101 years old. She is buried with her second husband, Ermal.
