Commissioned in 1895, the USS Maine was built in response to Brazil's increase in naval power. She sailed into Havana January 1898 and three weeks later she exploded and was lost. Though the cause was never determined, the thought was Spain was to blame and the Maine rallied the nation during the Spanish American War. This plaque was designed by the famous artist Charles Keck from NYC, NY. Xit was an actual part of the USS Maine's hull. Today it's one of the last memories of a near forgotten event.
