A sign on the Flower Mound Heritage Walk provides a little history about Waketon resident, Sam O. Hudson, who went from living in a hole in the ground to a pretty nice piece of property here, once owned by Simpson Wakefield, Waketon's namesake.

The Flower Mound Heritage Walk is located in the Robertson's Creek Shopping Center, and can be found behind the Starbucks. Today, Waketon is part of Flower Mound, and besides the old house, Waketon Road is just south of here. The Wakefield property extended some distance in any direction from here, and the Bethel Community was to the east. The sign says:

"Sam. O. Hudson

Sam O. Hudson was the son of Samuel O. Hudson and Mary Ann (Stine) Hudson. He married Margaret Nowlin of the Bethel Community. Their two surviving children were Ed and Carrie. After Margaret died in 1898 Sam, Mary, Ed and Carrie underwent hard times. The family moved to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, and lived in a "dugout" for several years.

They returned to the Waketon area when Sam traded his Indian Territory property for the Wakefield farm. Carrie and Ed attended the Chinn Chapel School and later Ed married Mamie Calvert and Carrie married James Wonnie Painter. Ed and Mamie continued to live on the "home place" while Carrie and Wonnie moved to a four-room house west and across the road from the Chinn Chapel Methodist Church."

One note: Mr. Hudson was the son of Samuel _H._ Hudson, who married Mary Ann StineS. They are both buried in Swisher Cemetery, northeast of here in Lake Dallas.
