The following information is from the Find A Grave website:
"Alvia Dopson, a white man, and a member of the crew of the dredge boat Atlantic, was caught in the machinery on board the boat while it was off Commodore's Point at about 10 o'clock yesterday morning and was crushed to death.
Members of the crew attempted to save him from a horrible fate, but they were unable to reach him in time. He was badly mashed in his chest and lived but a short time afterward. The body was removed to the undertaking establishment of Funeral Director Marcus Conant and will be prepared for interment. Dopson is said to have been a good workman and was well liked. An inquest in connection with the case will be held by Justice John W. DuBose Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock."
