Philipp I., genannt der Großmütige aus dem Haus Hessen (* 13. November 1504 in Marburg; † 31. März 1567 in Kassel), war von 1509/1518 bis 1567 Landgraf der Landgrafschaft Hessen und einer der bedeutendsten Landesfürsten und politischen Führer im Zeitalter von Reformation und Renaissance im Heiligen Römischen Reich. Am 1. Juli 1527 gründete Landgraf Philipp die heute nach ihm benannte Universität in Marburg.

Philip I., called the Magnanimous from home Hesse (born November 13, 1504 Marburg, † March 31, 1567 in Kassel), was from 1509/1518 to 1567 Landgrave of Hesse Landgraviate and one of the foremost princes and political leaders in the age Reformation and Renaissance in the Holy Roman Empire. On July 1, 1527 founded Landgrave Philip the named today after him Universität in Marburg.
