The memorial was erected to the memory of Sergeant Major Albert Houghton who was killed in the Boer War 14th October 1901 and was erected by the residents of Inverleigh and unveiled by Colonel Templeton on the 14th May 1902.
The obelisk is regarded as the earliest memorial erected to a fallen soldier in Victoria.
The inscription on the marble plaque reads :-
"Erected
by the inhabitants,
in memory of Serjt. Major Albert Houchton
Victorian 5th Contingent
killed in action at Utrecht,
South Africa,
16th October, 1901.
He did his duty as a soldier
and a man"
