In Windsor, on the summit of Mt. Ascutney, is this survey disk at the summit.
To get to the summit, you can either walk up one of several trails or drive on the autoroad to the parking lot at 2800 ft, then walk .8 miles the last 344 vertical feet. Follow signs to the summit, which at the south end of the ridge, by a cell tower.
The disk should not be confused with the disk designated "ASCUTNEY RESET," which is at the northern end of the ridge. The data sheet for this disk does mention the disk, here, however. The following is from the description:
"...ABOUT 1,400 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE ASCUTNEY MTN. FIRE TOWER, WHICH HAS AN UNSTAMPED USGS DISK SET AT CENTER OF BASE OF TOWER..."
The current lookout tower is NOT the location where the fire tower was. The fire tower was located to the south where a cell tower is now located - there are footings visible that may have been from that tower.
The disk is brass, cemented into the rock.
The disk is in poor shape. Much of it has been gouged and banged, making markings difficult to read. At the top are the words, "US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY COOPERATING WITH THE STATE." At the bottom are the usual warnings about disturbing the mark. Beyond that it is hard to read.
One reference mark was found, on a nearby ledge, next to the cell tower fence.
Web Site for MT ASCUTNEY RESET which mentions the disk.
