A sign accompanying the sculpture reads:

"Gather Round The Fire

This male Homo heidelbergensis lived
in a social group that hunted large animals
and shared food with each other. They also
controlled fire and built shelters. These social
and behavioral skills enabled them to
endure several ice ages in Europe."

The 2010 bronze work by Jogn Gurche depicts the life-sized figure crouched around a fire and offering something to an unseen other.

There is no charge to visit the Museum which is open daily 9 to 5.
