Located at the beginning of the Discovery Trail and near a building is a citizen memorial plaque in memory of Dave Menke, who was a US Fish and Wildlife employee for many years. On the memorial plaque is a quote by author Sam Keen that reads:

"WE LEARN TO FLY NOT BY BECOMING FEARLESS,
BUT BY THE DAILY PRACTICE OF COURAGE."
-SAM KEEN-

This quote is from Sam Keen's book titled Learning to Fly: Reflections on Fear, Trust, and the Joy of Letting Go (1999).
