Preserved battlefield and associated buildings from the First and Second Battles of Kernstown.

The first Battle of Kernstown, the first such action in the Shenandoah Valley, saw 10,000 men from both Union and Confederate forces engaged. It resulted in an eventual Confederate defeat, the only one suffered by Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

The second Battle of Kernstown saw a reversal of fortune, as the Confederate forces under General Breckinridge pushed back the UNion forces. Casualties were 1,200 Union to only 300 Confederate soldiers.

Today, battlefield tours are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays from May to October. The battlefield is administered by the Kernstown Battlefield Association, Inc. Visitors can visit the various buildings, including a great collection of artillery, and follow a walking tour of the battlefield.
