Inside the Tulelake National Wildlife Center is a painted sculpture of a white pelican, one of many migratory species of birds that pass through this area multiple times throughout the year. There is a metal plaque on the base of the sculpture that reads:
This pelican,
designed and painted
by Stefan Savides,is dedicated by
Klamath Wingwatchers and the
Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges
in memory of
Dave Menke
to honor his work with youth, wildlife, and the
Klamath Basin Birding Trail.
I actually had the pleasure of knowing Dave Menke and worked with him many years ago on a wildlife refuge booklet that I designed as a graphic artist. He was a top notch professional guy and I know many people in the Klamath Basin miss him after his untimely death.
