Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
A Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme
Humpty Dumpty is typically portrayed as an anthropomorphic egg as used in many children’s books. His origin is still unclear; however some do believe he was an oversized cannon that fell from its mount during the siege of Colchester during the English Civil War in 1648. Apparently, it was so large that it could not be reinstated, even by "all the King's horses and all the King's men". Colchester fell to the Parliamentarians, and the nursery rhyme glorifies the siege.
Humpty Dumpty was featured in the 2015 Castlegar Sculpture Walk and now has a permanent location near the library.
Minneapolis artist Kimber Fiebiger has not only created a whole line of individualized bronze Humpty Dumpty’s, but also cleverly incorporates the images into outrageously captioned drawings or historic photos as unique prints.
“Mother Goose is often cited as the author of hundreds of children’s stories that have been passed down through oral tradition and published over centuries.
Despite her celebrated place in children’s literature, the exact identity and origin of Mother Goose herself is still unknown.
Regardless of Mother Goose’s origins, Charles Perrault was the first to actually publish a Mother Goose collection of rhymes and other folk tales in 1697, essentially initiating the fairy tale genre.”
