Built from 1895 to 1897, the church was placed under the patronage of St.Cleophas in memory of Mr. Cléophas Beausoleil former MP of Berthier County.

"La municipalité de la paroisse de Saint-Cléophas a été érigée le 7 octobre 1897. Le village est situé sur le parcours du chemin de fer Pacifique Canadien. La paroisse a été mise sous le patronage de saint Cléophas pour rappeler la mémoire de M. Cléophas Beausoleil, ancien député du comté de Berthier, qui s'intéressa activement à la fondation de cette paroisse. Du reste, le choix du saint patron fut fait conformément à la suggestion de Mgr Fabre, archevêque de Montréal, parce que lui-même avait une dévotion toute particulière pour saint Cléophas, disciple de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ."
