"POPLAR SALOON
AND TREONT HOUSE HARRY GOULD PLANTED POPLAR TREES HERE IN FRONT OF HIS SALOON IN 1852.THEY WERE A LONG TIME LANDMARK. IN 1855, CHARLES AYRES BUILT THE TREMONT HOUSE, FOR 70 YEARS A TOWN SOCIAL CENTER. ACROSS THE STREET P. P. CHAMBERLAIN OPERATED A GENERAL STORE AND WELLS FARGO & CO. EXPRESS AGENCY FROM 1875 TO 1911."
