The statue is of John Mason, who enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve at the age of 18 in 1942. After WWII ended he left the active Navy and attended the University of Toronto, earning a degree in mechanical engineering. He then returned to active duty in the Navy as an officer in 1949. He served during the Korean Conflict, and in 1964 he assumed the command of a Destroyer. John Mason retired in 1978 at the rank of Captain.
