In the 18th and 19th centuries Southwick, MA had as many as five gunpowder mills operating along Powder Mill Brook, now called Great Brook. Explosions at powder mills were an all too common occurrence. Julius Lee was one such victim of explosion. His headstone has a weeping willow in the lunette and the following inscription:

Julius Lee
who was exploded
in a powder
Mill
July 13, 1821

How sudden was the fatal stroke,
When the Lord his summons spoke
