The sign stands in front of a bank building -- Compass Bank in 2016 -- and it says:

Irving co-founder J.O. Schulze (1875-1961) established the Irving Lumber Company here in December 1903. Irving Lumber was the town's first mercantile business. After J.O. returned to Iowa in 1905, his brother C.P. Schulze (1877-1957), took over the company. During the late 1920s, C.P. built a brick office and added large lumber sheds.

In 1945, C.P. (Charles) Schulze, Jr. (1913-2003) joined his father in running the business. Charles moved the lumberyard to the north end of Main Street in 1959. He opened Handy House, one of the nation's first retail home improvement stores, on its former site in 1960. Irving Lumber closed about 1982. Handy House operated until the mid-1990s.
