The text of the plaque reads:
"General James Robertson (1742-1814) "Father of Tennesse" led a delegation from Wake County across the North Carolina Mountains in 1771 and found Watauga, the first independent self government in North America.
The Wake County plantation where he lived lies 1 1/2 mile east of here on the Neuse River.
