Die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig wird auf den 16. bis 19. Oktober 1813 datiert. In dieser Schlacht kämpften die Truppen der Verbündeten Russland, Preußen, Österreich und Schweden gegen die Truppen Napoleon Bonapartes. Napoleon musste am Ende eine Niederlage einstecken und sich mit seinen verbliebenen Truppen und ohne Verbündete aus Deutschland zurückziehen.

Am ersten Tag der Schlacht (dem 16.Oktober) positionierte Napoleon einen Großteil seiner Truppen (etwa 110.000) südlich von Leipzig. Den französischen Truppen gegenüber standen im Süden die Böhmische Armee unter Karl Philipp zu Schwarzenberg mit 130.000 Mann. Nördlich von Leipzig rückten die Alliierten Truppen unter Blücher gegen das französische Heer an. Einen großen Teil dieser Truppen (das I. Preußische Korps) befehligte Generallieutenant Johann David Ludwig Graf Yorck von Wartenburg (visit link) an der Stelle des heutigen Apelstein Nr. 20.
Generallieutenant Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg rückte mit seinem Korps gegen das durch seine Lage als natürliche Festung wirkende Dorf Möckern. Unter dem Verlust von 7.000 Mann wurde Möckern schließlich erstürmt und die französische Stellung im Norden von Leipzig durchbrochen.

The Battle of the nations near Leipzig ('Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig') was the decisive battle of the Wars of Liberation. At the site of the 'Apelstein Nr. 20' Generallieutenant Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg stood with about 21.000 man.
The 'Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig' is dated to October 16 to 19 1813. In this battle, the troops of the allies, Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden fought against the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte. At the end Napoleon were defeated and he had to retreat with his remaining troops and without allies from Germany.

On the first day of the battle (the October 16) Napoleon positioned much of his troops (about 110,000) in the south of Leipzig. The French troops were facing in the south the Bohemian army under Karl Philipp zu Schwarzenberg with 130.000 men. In the north of Leipzig the Allied troops marched under Blücher against the French army. A big part of these troops (the I. Prussian Korps) commanded Generallieutenant Johann David Ludwig Graf Yorck von Wartenburg (visit link) at the site of the present 'Apelstein Nr. 20'.
Generallieutenant Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg moved his corps against the natural fortress village Möckern. Under the loss of 7,000 men Möckern was finally stormed and the French position in the north of Leipzig were broken.
