Young Tom Morris was born on April 20th 1851, son of the famous early St Andrews golf professional, Tom Morris senior. He quickly followed his father into the profession, becoming a greenkeeper at St. Andrews before his father moved to Prestwick, Ayrshire, to become the new professional there.

The young Tom soon became adept at the game to such an extent that he played in his first Open Championship aged just 14. The following year in 1866 he finished 9th and then 4th in 1867. His first win came the next year, and he went on to win an unprecedented four in a row, claiming the champions belt as his own, aged only 21.

He died on Christmas Day in 1875, allegedly of a broken heart after his wife died during a difficult labour of their first child. His grave stands against the southern wall of the cathedral ruins along with other family members.

Description:
Youngest winner of the Open Golf Championship at 17. Only man to win the event four years running 1868-69-70-72, (no championship in 1871). The first known golfing great. Might have gone on to even greater stature but for his tragic death at a young age.
