Die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig wird auf den 16. bis 19. Oktober 1813 datiert. In dieser Schlacht kämpften die Truppen der Verbündeten Russland, Preußen, Österreich und Schweden gegen die Truppen Napoleon Bonapartes. Napoleon musste am Ende eine Niederlage einstecken und sich mit seinen verbliebenen Truppen und ohne Verbündete aus Deutschland zurückziehen.

Am Morgen des dritten Tages der Schlacht (dem 18.Oktober) musste sich Napoleon mit seinen Truppen näher an Leipzig zurückziehen. Das Zentrum der französischen Truppen bildete der Ort Probstheida, wo auch dieser Apelstein steht. Das II. Korps unter Jaques Alexandre Bernard Law, marquis de Lauriston (visit link) und das V. Korps unter Perrin, Claude Victor (visit link) konnten dem vereinten Angriff der Alliierten an dieser Stelle nur wenige Stunden Stand halten.

Im Laufe des 18. Oktober 1813 erlitt das französische Heer vor allem in Norden und Osten von Leipzig viele Verluste, weshalb am Abend der Rückzug über Leipzig in Richtung Westen befohlen wurde. Während sich das V. Korps unter Victor zurückziehen konnte, hatte Lauriston den Befehl, den Rückzug zu decken. Er geriet am 19. Oktober in Leipzig in Gefangenschaft.

The Battle of the nations near Leipzig ('Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig') was the decisive battle of the Wars of Liberation. At the site of the 'Apelstein Nr. 31', the French troops (30,000) of Viktor and Lauriston stood.

In the morning of the third day of the battle (the October 18) Napoleon had to withdraw closer to Leipzig. While the V. Korps could withdraw under Victor, Lauriston had the order to cover the retreat. On 19. October he was arrested in Leipzig.
