Das Michelstädter Fachwerk-Rathaus, das auf einer Briefmarke der Deutschen Post abgebildet und in der ganzen Welt bekannt ist, wurde im Jahre 1484 im Stil der Spätgotik errichtet, danach mehrfach im Inneren verändert und war von 1743 bis 1903 verschindelt. Das Erdgeschoss des Rathauses diente von Beginn an als Markthalle. Das Rathaus wurde in Rähmbauweise errichtet, der rückwärtige Teil (Ostwand) war ursprünglich ein Teil der Friedhofsmauer, auf der das obere Rähm des Erdgeschosses aufliegt. Der Baumeister ist unbekannt, vermutet wird, dass die Anregung für den Bau von Schenk Adolar von Erbach und Bischof Johann von Dalberg (dessen Berater) ausgegangen sein könnte.
