A sign on the front wall of the old guard house detailing the history of the area that reads :-

" Princess Royal Fortress
The construction of a fortress at King George Sound to defend the Port of Albany against occupation by a hostile naval force was recommended by Sir William Jervois in 1878, The Fortress was planned in 1881 by Major Peter Scratchley and built in 1892 by John Blackbourn, The guns were emplaced in 1893 by Captain James Hawker, with troops enlisted from South Australia to form the first garrison artillery. Originally called 'Federal Fortress - King George Sound' the Fortress was operational from 1893 until 1956"
