This historical marker is located on US 17 Business (Broad Street) in Edenton. It was originally erected in 1936. The current marker was erected in 1948.

Built in 1767, the Chowan County Courthouse served as a Whig center during the Revolutionary War. It is the nation's best preserved colonial courtroom and finest Georgian courthouse in the South. The beautiful paneled room upstairs has served as public meeting place, ballroom, and as a banquet hall when President Monroe visited Edenton in 1819.
