In Windsor, near the Connecticut River, is Mt. Ascutney, which is an isolated peak of the Green Mountains.
The moutnain is within Ascutney State Park. You have a choice of either parking at the base and walking up, park at about mid-elevation and walk up, or drive up the auto road to the top parking lot and walk a tenth mile to the summit. I started from the midpoint parking lot and walked up, then I split from my party and walked down the trail to the campground at the base.
Mt. Ascutney has an elevation of 3130 feet (954 m.). It is not nearly the tallest mountain in the state or even the area - Mt. Killington is much higher to the west. However, it is by itself - with a minor peak - Little Ascutney, so, it is easily visible from the Connecticut River Valley.
The summit is actually a long ridge. There are two sets of benchmarks on top, so, I suppose they both count. The actual summit is marked by the southern benchmark, which is in rock near a communications tower. It is south of a look out tower. The benchmark is a brass disk that has been worn and chipped.
