The ferry crosses the Rhine between Bonn-Beuel ("Hans-Steger-Ufer") and the center of Bonn ("Brassertufer") at "Stromkilometer" 655. The ferry is the only remaining ferry on the Rhine of the city of Bonn. The Beueler "Schiffer Family" Schmitz operates a ferry between Beuel and Bonn already since 1930. This ferry was taken in operation in 1980.
After the Second World War and the consequent destruction of the old bridge over the Rhine the ferrys were for a long time the only way, to cross the Rhine. The ferry Rheinnixe is 25 meters long, seven meters wide and six meters high, with a weight of about 50 tons. The ship is driven by only one person. The skipper can secure the ferry with powerful electromagnet on the trailer and operate the doors from the driver's cab.
