There used to be a ferry landing close-by from whence a ferry could be taken across to Greenwich. It is from this that the pub probably took its name.
The sign hangs from the corner of the building and shows a river scene, probably not the River Thames as it is too narrow and the ferry worked across it not along it, with a lady being assisted from the ferry, a rowing boat, by a gentleman who could be her husband. The ferry man can be seen in the boat with a further couple of boats visible in the distance. There is a covered area adjacent to the ferry landing under which is a man sat at a table with a tankard of ale.
