"Stad en wijde omgeving worden gedomineerd door de gotische toren van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasiliek. Ontegensprekelijk één van de mooiste religieuze bouwwerken die ons land rijk is. Meer dan 300 jaar waren nodig om dit prachtig monument te voltooien. Het interieur is uitermate rijk aan kunstschatten. Bekendst is ongetwijfeld het uit notenhout gesneden beeld van Onze-Lieve Vrouw van Tongeren – Oorzaak Onzer Blijdschap, dat dateert van omstreeks 1479. De Romaanse kloostergang uit de 12de eeuw mag beschouwd worden als een zeldzame getuige van Romaanse bouwkunst in België.

"City and surrounding area are dominated by the Gothic tower of the Our Lady Basilica. Undeniably one of the most beautiful religious buildings in our country. More than 300 years were needed to complete this magnificent monument. The interior is extremely rich in art treasures. Best known is undoubtedly from walnut carved statue of Our Lady of Tongeren - Cause of Our Joy, which dates from around 1479. The Romanesque cloister may be seen from the 12th century as a rare witness of Romanesque architecture in Belgium.
