This building started out as the Melvin E. Hearl American Legion Post No. 21 building. This Legion Hall was built in 1936 as part of the Works Progress Administration depression recovery work in Clay County, Minnesota.
Art Deco started out in France before World War I, grew in popularity and influence, but started losing it's popularity in the 1940's. At least that is what Art Deco authority Alistair Duncan has to say. Mr. Duncan goes on to write "Art Deco was the last splendidly self-indulgent decorative style..." and that like most things, there are differing opinions on what Art Deco is and so, when it flourished.
The door frieze on the front of the building has geometric shapes and the assertive 'modern' symmetry that historian Bevis Hillier describes as defining caractorisits of Art Deco.
Artist: Unknown. Most likely the same person who created the faces that can be seen on the four corners of the original roof.
