Built in 1891 in an eclectic Victorian-era fashion, incorporating elements of the Second Empire, Gothic and Mediterranean styles. Remodeled in 1935-1937 with WPA help, resulted in the removal of its finer elements and the addition of a rear section.

The courthouse is the third built for the county. It was originally red brick but has been covered over with stucco. The style of the building is now listed as Italianate.

It has a clock tower with a clock face on all four sides.
