Stammsitz der Grafen von Wied bis 1653 Residenz der Niedergrafschaft Wied. Wohnturm zugleich Schildmauer als ältester Bauteil errichtet vor 1129 durch Graf Metfried von Wied, vor dem Graf im Engersgau. Im 13. und 14. Jahrhundert weiterer Ausbau in Einheit mit der Ortsbefestigung. Von deren 7 Mauertürmen und 3 Toren sind noch 3 Türme mit einem Mauerschnitt sowie das Haupttor erhalten. Geschützbastionen auf der Südwestseite der Burg aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Letzte Bautätigkeit im 17. Jahrhundert durch Umbau des Palas aus dem 12. Jahrhundert darauf Verlegung der Residenz in die 1653 gegründete Stadt Neuwied. Noch bis 1690 von Mitgliedern des Grafenhauses bewohnt, darauf allmählich verfallen.
